A Laguna Beach band will host a grassroots festival called Lagadelic on Saturday for the second year in a row.

Spliffriff, made up of vocalist and bassist Jake Caliger, drummer Dante Madrigal and guitarist Nate Madigan, wanted to be a part of the continuous push for live music in Laguna Beach.

“The idea of Lagadelic started a year before the first one. The last four to five years, there’s been such a rebirth of live music, and we want to be a part of it,” Caliger said.

In addition to Spliffriff, bands like swmrs, Eighth Ball, IForget, Ginsu, The Alive and Tunnels will play from 1-10 p.m. at 725 Laguna Canyon Rd.

Lagadelic is also set to be an all-ages event, something that Madrigal says is lacking in the Orange County music scene.

This is the second year that Spliffriff is hosting this festival, and this year holds some major differences.

“Last year we tried to get it approved, and the city said no. The cops actually tried to shut it down, and we had to stand our ground and say no. We went to the city in April and they fully backed it,” Caliger said.

The event is sponsored by the Laguna Beach Beer Company, Shoots, Yuth Magazine, 805 Beer, and more.

According to Caliger, many of the sponsors they reached out to initially said no, but later asked to be involved after seeing the communities’ support of the event.

The Mauli Ola Foundation, a nonprofit that uses surfing to help children with genetic diseases, will also be sponsoring Lagadelic.

Spliffriff intends on hosting Lagadelic yearly, and has already started planning next year’s festival, with a goal of having multiple stages and a larger crowd.

“We have the potential to make it a legit annual event, if this goes right,” Madrigal said.

Events like Lagadelic bring a sense of community back into the music scene in Orange County.

“This year it’s 100% no profit, it’s an investment. We definitely don’t want to lose the community we made from last year. We want to do it right and build that trust,” Madrigal said.

The tickets are set at $45, and the event will have food and drinks available for purchase.
